Waterless Toilet
Rethinking Sanitation
A purpose-built, waterless sanitation solution tackling South Africa’s water scarcity and sanitation challenges. We worked with Flamingo Sanitation, an NPC, to develop their idea into a functional, safe and community-focused solution.
The Problem
Many communities in South Africa face critical sanitation challenges due to limited water availability and inadequate infrastructure. Traditional toilets are often impractical, costly, or unsustainable in these contexts, creating a need for safe, low-water, and community-focused solutions.

Design Exploration
We studied local sanitation challenges to define key needs like hygiene, accessibility, and practical usability.
Drawing on research, sketches, and early concept models, we explored multiple design directions, refining solutions that balanced functionality, manufacturability, and community impact. Inspiration from traditional African wooden chairs helped shape the design’s form and approach.

Design Proposal
We selected the most feasible concept and developed a detailed CAD model, showing how the system meets safety, hygiene and accessibility needs while providing manufacturing insights for future development.
